Neighbors in South Roanoke tree planting events are a collaboration of Neighbors in South Roanoke (“SoRo Neighbors”), Trees Roanoke, Roanoke Tree Stewards volunteers, and the Urban Forestry Division of the City of Roanoke. With input from Urban Forestry, appropriate trees will be selected for approved sites requested by residents. 10-15 trees planted in one day will be our goal for each planting event. SoRo Neighbors will coordinate as many dates as possible to accommodate requests. Tree Planting Events Help us identify where to plant next! Request Up to 2 Tree Sites! In coordination with Trees Roanoke Roanoke Tree Stewards and City of Roanoke Urban Forestry Division See pictures from our inaugural event held on Saturday, Sept 28, 2024 Neighbors in South Roanoke tree planting events are a collaboration of Neighbors in South Roanoke (“SoRo Neighbors”), Trees Roanoke , Roanoke Tree Stewards , and the Urban Forestry Division of the City of Roanoke . SoRo Neighbors will coordinate as many dates as possible to accommodate requests. Cost: As a nonprofit organization, Trees Roanoke can purchase wholesale plant material, which helps lower costs. Prices for trees vary based on size and type, but the estimated cost is $100/tree for a tree large enough to have good survivability yet small enough to be handled by volunteers. Anyone who has purchased a tree can attest that this is a great price. While there is no charge to those who receive a tree during a tree planting event, residents are strongly encouraged to make tax deductible donations to Trees Roanoke to help defray the cost of growing our city’s tree canopy. Tree Stewards are city volunteers and operate under Roanoke City Parks and Recreation. Almost all of Trees Roanoke’s plantings are done on city property, either in parks or in streetside grass strips, aka tree lawns. City equipment and tools are used to transport materials, dig the holes, and water the trees on planting day. A selection of hand tools is provided for the planting event, but residents are also welcome to bring their own tools. Building Community: Building community, meeting our neighbors, enjoying the outdoors together are wonderful side effects of tree planting events. Neighbors in South Roanoke officers and organization bylaws. Officers Alice Ann Clark President I thought I said goodbye to Roanoke after graduating from high school, but here I am! I thoroughly enjoyed living in Blacksburg, Richmond, and Los Angeles all before moving back with my husband Casey, and our daughter Garland “Gigi” and having our second little girl, Codori “Coco”. South Roanoke, the place I've called home since I was 4 years old, called me back and to say our little family is thriving here would be an understatement. We could not be happier with our decision to make South Roanoke our home. I was thrilled and honored to take the position of President of Neighbors in South Roanoke to continue to foster community and connection for our neighborhood. I am eager to represent all of our neighbors' diverse needs, interests and desires for our little pocket here in Roanoke. Stewart Putney Secretary In 1999, my husband, Todd, our two young children, and I moved to Avenham Avenue from Charleston, South Carolina. We did not know anyone in Roanoke, but neighbors quickly enveloped and included us. We've made life-long friends and relationships, and I am eternally grateful for these gifts. I am passionate about keeping South Roanoke the best little neighborhood it can be, and I always strive to help newcomers feel as welcome as we did. Barbara Andes Webmaster What better preparation for the role of volunteer webmaster then 30+ years of volunteering in Roanoke! I'm excited to join the Board of NiSR in support of the organization's effort to bring neighbors together. Providing accurate, timely information to ensure the success of all the Board has planned is my focus. Helping neighbors, having fun, and building friendships are the icing and candles on the cake! Katherine Blair Vice President I am a recent transplant to South Roanoke! My husband Matthew, our four cockatiels, and I moved to this beautiful neighborhood from Southern California in the winter of 2021. Our first night in our home in SoRo was Christmas Eve. Our moving truck was late, so we had nothing - no boxes, no furniture, no Christmas tree! But, we did have lovely neighbors who knocked on our door and welcomed us with kitchen utensils and coffee. I am thrilled to pass along that spirit of welcoming and neighborly kindness as Vice President of this wonderful neighborhood association. Irene Malachowsky Treasurer Do tourist slogans work? In our case, it was a resounding "Yes" as the ever present “Virginia is For Lovers” bumper sticker helped to guide my husband, Ron, and I from Long Island to the Blue Ridge Mountains. We were avid hikers and took that passion over to the AT and never looked back. Hiking morphed into discovering rails-to-trails to bike and we can be seen by our neighbors most days of the week walking in our vacation setting of a neighborhood. As a former vice president for LIYA, the Long Island Yoga Association, which predates my obtaining certification as a yoga teacher, then continuing my studies to include specialization in osteoporosis, arthritis and later as a Cardiac Rehab RN following my heart continued my studies in Cardiac® Yoga and stress management becoming a HeartMath® Certified Coach. Thrilled to now volunteer once again but this time as Treasurer for Neighbors in South Roanoke. I look forward to helping our neighborhood blossom, to reach its full potential. Download Bylaws PDF
