A celebration: Exciting news from your family; a shout out for a job well done, a kind gesture, or a milestone reached; a chance to share good news! A clearing: A safety or security concern; an item you've reported to the appropriate city auth orities you want to make NiSR aware of; a chance to keep neighbors informed; a good ol' fashioned complaint. This morning I was almost hit by a car speeding along Wiley Dr while I was crossing it the way to the Riverside cluster This is not an isolated incident as it has also happened crossing McClanahan and Evans Mill and Reserve Ave. With Carilion adding more staff and more parking spaces while at the same time re-routing traffic off Jefferson ST, traffic along these feeder roads has become increasingly speedier and aggressive. Carilion certainly has a responsibility for helping ameliorate this problem, but we also know that the City pays attention to its formal neighborhood organizations. I would like to request that NiSR make a formal organizational request to the City (and to Carilion) that the situation has become very dangerous and steps be taken to ameliorate the danger. These could be lowered speed limits, speed reducing measures (e.g speed shoulders), better and more visible crosswalks- with lighted pedestrian signals - and more traffic enforcement. It is only a matter of time before a predictable tragedy occurs along this corridor. A Clearing Submitted on August 25, 2024 I submitted a request to the city to address the lack of visibility at the corner of Avenham & Wildwood including a stop sign and crosswalk markings as this is a school bus stop on both N/S bound). A Clearing Submitted on May 21, 2024 Be extremely cautious at the new four-way stop intersections on Avenham Ave. at 26th and 27 Streets. Many motorists are not yet accustomed to the new traffic pattern and running the stops on Avenham. A Celebration Submitted on March 12, 2024 I am so glad that spring is here, and we can once again have "PLAWKING" events (walking/socializing with neighbors, making new connections, picking up trash to beautify our area, and then post-PLAWK socializing at Fork! Neighbors in South Roanoke officers and organization bylaws. Officers Alice Ann Clark President I thought I said goodbye to Roanoke after graduating from high school, but here I am! I thoroughly enjoyed living in Blacksburg, Richmond, and Los Angeles all before moving back with my husband Casey, and our daughter Garland “Gigi” and having our second little girl, Codori “Coco”. South Roanoke, the place I've called home since I was 4 years old, called me back and to say our little family is thriving here would be an understatement. We could not be happier with our decision to make South Roanoke our home. I was thrilled and honored to take the position of President of Neighbors in South Roanoke to continue to foster community and connection for our neighborhood. I am eager to represent all of our neighbors' diverse needs, interests and desires for our little pocket here in Roanoke. Stewart Putney Secretary In 1999, my husband, Todd, our two young children, and I moved to Avenham Avenue from Charleston, South Carolina. We did not know anyone in Roanoke, but neighbors quickly enveloped and included us. We've made life-long friends and relationships, and I am eternally grateful for these gifts. I am passionate about keeping South Roanoke the best little neighborhood it can be, and I always strive to help newcomers feel as welcome as we did. I'm excited to join the Board of NiSR in support of the organization's effort to bring neighbors together. Katherine Blair Vice President I am a recent transplant to South Roanoke! My husband Matthew, our four cockatiels, and I moved to this beautiful neighborhood from Southern California in the winter of 2021. Our first night in our home in SoRo was Christmas Eve. Our moving truck was late, so we had nothing - no boxes, no furniture, no Christmas tree! But, we did have lovely neighbors who knocked on our door and welcomed us with kitchen utensils and coffee. I am thrilled to pass along that spirit of welcoming and neighborly kindness as Vice President of this wonderful neighborhood association. Irene Malachowsky Treasurer Do tourist slogans work? In our case, it was a resounding "Yes" as the ever present “Virginia is For Lovers” bumper sticker helped to guide my husband, Ron, and I from Long Island to the Blue Ridge Mountains. We were avid hikers and took that passion over to the AT and never looked back. Hiking morphed into discovering rails-to-trails to bike and we can be seen by our neighbors most days of the week walking in our vacation setting of a neighborhood. As a former vice president for LIYA, the Long Island Yoga Association, which predates my obtaining certification as a yoga teacher, then continuing my studies to include specialization in osteoporosis, arthritis and later as a Cardiac Rehab RN following my heart continued my studies in Cardiac® Yoga and stress management becoming a HeartMath® Certified Coach. Thrilled to now volunteer once again but this time as Treasurer for Neighbors in South Roanoke. I look forward to helping our neighborhood blossom, to reach its full potential. Download Bylaws PDF
