NiSR June 13 Meeting Recap

NiSR

Updates, Events & Action!

Thank you to everyone who attended Tuesday's Neighbors in South Roanoke June 13 meeting. What a great turnout! 27+ attendees PLUS our RPD Community Resource Officer Jacob Underwood and a representative from Del. Sam Rasoul's office.

Board President Alice Ann Clark introduced the Board members, explained the SoRo Solutions form (online and hard copy), and invited everyone to join in several upcoming events:

  • June 21 at 5:30 Summer Solstice SoRo Plawk: Meet at Fork in the Alley

  • June 25 from 3:00 - 5:00 Sunday Picnic in the Park: Greenspace at Fire Station #8

  • July 4 at 10:00am Independence Day SoRo Family Parade: Meet at Fire Station #8 for a perfect kickoff to a long, wonderful day of celebrating.

  • August 1 from 6:30 - 8:00 National Night Out: Greenspace at Fire Station #8

Guest Speaker Al Henry, SoRo neighbor and member of Pedal Safe ROA, addressed the residents with PedalSafeROA's mission and purpose – “to promote Roanoke as a livable community by improving the safety, convenience and acceptance of cycling for all people.” The group's focus includes safe streets and roads for all, safer greenways, safe routes to schools, and more.

"One of the first projects of PedalSafeROA is the Quick Fixes Project. This project has identified areas of safety concern for cyclists and pedestrians in various city neighborhoods that can be addressed quickly and at relatively low cost, without requiring outside funding from state or federal sources. The proposals from PedalSafeROA may not be the preferred permanent solutions but can address the problems in the short term while more permanent solutions are developed," Al explained. He was excited to explain and seek support for the quick fixes proposed for SoRo.

What are the Quick Fixes in SORO, you ask?

The SORO to Roanoke River Greenway corridor: Refresh faded crosswalks and add 6 in-street “Stop for Pedestrian Signs” to improve faded and poorly marked crosswalks on Wiley Drive, Evans Mill Road and McClanahan Street between Franklin Road and Jefferson Street.

Here is an online tool to voice your support for PedalSafeROA's proposed SoRo "quick fixes." Another option is to personally contact Bob Cowell, Roanoke City Manager (bob.cowell@roanokeva.gov) and the Mayor and Roanoke City Council (clerk@roanokeva.gov) with your comments.
